Parasite Prevention
Get Rid of Those Pesky Critters!
Parasites can be internal or external, and many of your pet’s parasites can affect you too. It is therefore important to give your pet the best treatment for parasites.
Heartworm Disease
Heartworms are a new concern in our area. Climate change has made our local mosquito population into great transporters of this deadly parasite. Once injected into your pet’s blood, the worms travel to the heart and lungs where they silently grow into deadly killers. In order to keep you pet safe and limit the spread of this horrible disease, we recommend yearly testing and monthly prevention for both dogs and cats.
Internal Parasites
We normally think of tapeworms when we hear the word parasite, but there are actually several types that we see in pets.
The most common are:
- Roundworms
- Hookworms
- Whipworms
- Coccidia
- Giardia
These parasites are easily picked up by your pet, and survive hiding in the intestines. They can make your pet (and you) seriously ill if not treated. It is best to detect these parasites early, which is why we are always pestering you for those smelly stool samples. Some of these parasites can make you and your family sick. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimate more than 10,000 human roundworm infections yearly, with 700 of those infected losing their eyesight permanently. Yep, we want those stool samples to protect you and your pet from these parasites.
External Parasites
Welcome to the world of fleas, ticks, ringworms, and mange! We see many cases of skin disease each year, many of them caused by external parasites. The good news is that external parasites are highly treatable. If left untreated, your pet will suffer from symptoms ranging from itching and hair loss to scabs and more serious diseases. Imagine getting bit by a mosquito and how much it itches. Now multiply it by 100!
We will work with you to find the best parasite control products that are right for your pet. From 3 month flea, tick and mange control like Bravecto chews for dogs, to all in one treatments like Revolution for our feline patients. As part of our service, we only carry products proven to be both safe and effective.
Can I buy Online?
Many flea and tick products can be found on the internet or at local stores. Sadly, very few of these products are guaranteed by the manufacturer and certified manufacturers will only provide prescription controlled products to Veterinarians. Online stores and sources can only provide these products through the “grey market” which goes uncontrolled and unregulated. While most products are the genuine article, recalled products and clever fakes are not uncommon. Should these products hurt your pet, the manufacturer will not be held responsible. We recommend checking out our online store where we work to keep our prices competitive as possible, while providing top quality guaranteed products that are chosen specifically for your pets needs.
